What is CBD

If you're one to stay up on the latest advancements in holistic medicine, you've likely heard of CBD. The remarkable herb has been making substantial headway in terms of reducing the need for many conventional medications. Derived from the hemp plant, CBD has less than 0.3% THC, making it non-toxic, all natural and incredibly safe not only for humans, but for our dogs as well.
From managing anxiety to reducing the growth and spreading of cancer cells, CBD is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Perhaps the largest CBD advancement in recent news has been the incredible effects that the herb has for those suffering from seizures and epilepsy. We are happy to inform our readers that CBD not only treats humans of all ages, but also effectively treats our furry companions.

Dangers of Convention Anti-Seizure Medication

Studies show that up to 5% of all dogs suffer from seizures. While genetics and breed do come into play, it is entirely possible for any dog of any age to have a seizure. Here's where things get worrisome. Conventional anti-seizure medication can be extremely dangerous for your dog for a multitude of reasons.
Firstly, the two drugs most commonly used to treat seizures in dogs are phenobarbital and potassium bromide. While these drugs may help reduce the number of seizures that your dog has, the medications can cause significant, irreversible damage to the dog's vital organs. Liver and kidney failure are both tied in with these anticonvulsant drugs if they are given long-term... and they have to be given long-term. Studies have found that once you begin administering anti-seizure drugs, they have to be given for the remainder of the dog's life. If anticonvulsant medication is started and then stopped, the dog's chance of developing more severe seizures in the future increases exponentially.
Additionally, even when the conventional medications are administered properly, they don't always work. You read that correctly. In many cases, the number of seizures and the severity of the episodes didn't lessen with the medication. Therefore, pet owners were adding an extreme amount of toxins to their dog's system for ultimately no reason whatsoever.
Furthermore, toxicity itself significantly increases the risk of having a seizure. Therefore, long-term (mandatory) use of anti-seizure medication actually increases the risk of your dog having a seizure.

CBD for Treating Seizures and Epilepsy

Luckily, with recent breakthroughs, dog owners now have options. CBD oil for dogs has proved to be an absolute game-changer in the ways that we are able to ease our pet's suffering. Furthermore, CBD oil has proven to be successful in treating dogs who were immune or resistant to medications such as phenobarbital and potassium bromide. That's right. An all natural herb is working in ways that conventional drugs couldn't.
All things considered, we know that you want what's best for your pet. Having an epileptic dog can be extremely hard on a dog owner and not knowing where to turn or what to do makes it even harder. Thankfully, we are living in a time where conventional drugs are no longer an absolute necessity. Holistic medicine is making new breakthroughs every day and we couldn't be more grateful for alternative ways to ensure our dogs are living the best lives possible.
